How to Test Drive a Used Vehicle
Never buy a used car without test-driving it first. That's probably a no-brainer—but exactly how do you test-drive a used car? What considerations should you take, what questions should you ask, and what criteria should you use to make an evaluation? The answers to these questions may not be quite as intuitive, yet they are every bit as important to answer before you begin considering your used automobile purchase.
The most crucial thing to keep in mind might seem, once again, like an obvious point, but it is nevertheless important: When test-driving a vehicle, you are the customer, and it is your preference that counts. When test-driving with a salesperson, always remember that you set the agenda and your concerns are the ones that ultimately matter. Don't let the salesperson decide how you are going to evaluate your prospective automobile!
When embarking on a test drive, you might consider going alone—or with your spouse, if he or she is making the decision with you. Bringing the whole family along might prove to be a distraction from what is truly the goal of the test-drive—and that, naturally, is an honest assessment of the vehicle's comfort and performance.
You might also consider doing a quick evaluation of the car's comfort before you even head off the lot. Jumping in and out of the car a few times will give you a feel for how comfortable it will be in terms of its height and its distance off the ground; obviously, no one wants a car that is uncomfortable for them to enter or exit. Also try fiddling with the controls, testing the heat and air, even giving the car a good sniff to make sure there aren't any deep-set odors from the prior owner. Be aware of how accessible the controls are from your position in the driver's seat.
Once you're on the road, try mixing it up. Don't just stick to smooth, well-paved roads; see how it performs on bumpy surfaces. Evaluate how well the car merges on highways, how easy it is for you to make out street signs, and so forth. Make sure you use the brakes enough to get a feel for how they respond, and make sure to pay attention to the responsiveness of the steering.
You might also try testing the alignment—in a safe, quiet area, of course. Briefly take your hand off the wheel and see if the car has a tendency to veer in a particular direction. Try this on different surfaces if you can.
And in the end, remember, once again, that you are the customer—and the customer is always right. Just because you test a vehicle does not mean you have any obligation to purchase it; if any of the above tests fail to satisfy you, you have every right to just walk away. Do not allow the dealer to pressure you into making any hasty choices with your money; there are plenty of fish in the sea, so to speak, and you will find another car to buy just as surely as the dealer will find another customer!
