What are star constellations?
Introduction
In the sky at night among the many stars, there tends to be the appearance of groups. Some of these groups of stars appear to form some kind of shape or pattern. The people in the ancient Greek times, branded them as they saw them. A majority of these groups resemble some known objects, animal figure and mythical heroes etc. these groups of stars are called constellations. Some famous among them are Orion (giant hunter), Ursa Major (great bear), Cygnus (swan), hydra (sea serpent) and Hercules.

The contemporary definition of what we know as a constellation is however different, now the scientist has decided to divide the sky into different regions. These regions of sky are now called constellation. People now label the constellations as a derivation from groups of bright stars contained in them. Thus a constellation is a defined region of the sky marked by arbitrary boundary lines to include a prominent group of stars. There are 88 constellations in all. The largest of these is hydra which covers 6. 3% of the hemisphere and the smallest constellation is southern crux with an area of only 16% of the whole sky.
Well-known Constellations
Orion
A well-known constellation group star is Orion which means giant hunter. This group appears to look like a hunter, if we watch this group of stars for a period of time, we will notice that they appear to move from east to west. Since the earth is rotating about its axis from west to east, the stars appears to move in the opposite direction.
Ursa Major
One of the most renowned constellations is the Ursa Major which means great bear. It is also known by the name of saptrishi (seven sages). There are seven stars in this group the foundation of the group is such that it resembles a pan with handle. This was called great bear also because along with some less bright stars in the vicinity, it resembles the figure of the bear.
Conclusion
In the western world sky is broken down into parts as adopted by the ancient Greeks. On the other hand, Chinese constellations are different from western constellations. Chinese call a constellation raashis and there are 12 in number. They are further subdivided into 27 nakshatra or lunar houses.
