Things To Remember As Your Senior Year Winds Down
If you are in twelfth grade and you will be heading off to college in the fall, there are a lot of things you need to do now and in the coming months to prepare. The spring of your final year in high school will be one of the busiest, but most exciting, of your entire life. You will be preparing for graduation, planning summer activities and getting ready to possibly move away from home for the first time in your life. With all of these events and plans, you may forget some important things on your to do list. First, make sure you have senior pictures taken. Chances are, your parents will help you arrange these because they will want photos from such an important time in your life. Your school will also need a photo for the yearbook. A photography studio will help you get great photos to commemorate this part of your life and make sure you have a great yearbook photo for all of your friends to remember you by.
Another important part of your last year in high school is finishing up your college applications. Most students have everything submitted by the holidays and some ambitious kids have known for a year where they will be going to college. However, if you are lagging behind, now is the time to buckle down and make sure you have your applications in? Colleges prefer to look over their incoming classes in advance and set up interviews with potential students. The sooner you get these tasks out-of-the-way, the less stressful things will be.
In addition to the applications, be sure your standardized tests are taken and the scores have been submitted to your colleges. Even if you do not plan to immediately go to college, it is still a good idea to take the tests while you are still in high school. If you take a break between high school and college, you can lose that test-taking edge, so while high school is in full swing, you might as well sign up for one or two additional tests. The scores can always wait while you do other things besides college classes.
Once your applications are in and you have received offers, narrow down your choices. Most kids know where they will be going by the time they graduate from high school, but even if the decision is not official, you should at least be choosing between just two or three. Some families wait until all of the financial aid and scholarship awards are in and base their decision on those. Having your choices organized though is a must by spring time.
Finally, plan your graduation party. This will be one of the most fun phases of your life, so make sure you take time to celebrate it with the people have supported you and been your friends for years. Graduation from high school is one of the first big accomplishments you will experience in life, so you should reward yourself with a major celebration. After all, four years of college or the working world lies ahead for you, so let loose and have some fun now.

Do colleges see through doing community service work before senior year?
I want to do a 6-week service trip to Thailand, Vietnam, Senegal, Rwanda, or Peru this summer. It would be the summer before my senior year. My mom thinks that colleges I will be applying to will see through the trip as just an attempt to be set apart from other applicants and will not take it seriously. What do you guys think?
Well, is that what the trip is? Just an attempt for you to set yourself apart? I think their view of it is really going to depend on whether or not you've done community service before and/or whether or not you keep doing it through your senior year. If you want to give them the most positive image of yourself as a service-oriented person, you'll want to find local opportunities that you can participate in during your senior year. You should also be prepared to answer questions about your service trip (e.g. "Why go overseas instead of work in your community?") though that's not necessarily them trying to be tough on you. It's just the admissions office trying to learn more about you, your interests, and what you'll bring to campus life.
