Easy, do it yourself live streaming
"We need to have this meeting presented live to a group out of state at the same time we are seeing it"
That was my instruction. Forget the fact that I had little background in video, besides being able to press record on the camera we use to log our meetings, this rather lofty technical goal was placed on my shoulders with no sense of hesitation. Even better? I had only a week to accomplish that, I was on my own, and had a paltry $100 dollar budget to make that happen. Just another day of working for a small company, I sometimes forget what "hat" I'm wearing each day... talk about stress!
Due to the deadline, I had little time to stand around and mope about how a secretary should not be doing these things. So I turned to that one guide and savior that we all do during our times of need = Google. The search process was long because, well, there are a lot people doing live video if you haven't looked before. I couldn't go with just anyone, though, because this was important information, not something we wanted to appear all over Youtube (even if they did live streaming; which they don't, FYI, I checked and double checked). I looked over some, like Watershed and Ooyala, but they were outside my budget and I needed something I could try. Signing a contract and finding out it won't work for you would be a great story to tell your boss on why you didn't accomplish the task.
As I continued to search, I got slightly more savvy with the lingo, in terms of live versus VOD. I had already spent days talking to a couple of support teams, only to find out that I would be stuck in annual plans, subscriptions or other deadlocks if I tried out doing live video with them. Many of these contracts aren't cheap either. For example, Ooyala was going to charge me $500 a month for their basic plan. Now don't get me wrong, I'm sure they do amazing work, but $500 a month isn't chicken scratch to a small company; not to mention that I only needed it once during that month.
While I would love to pay someone to come out and do this work for me too, $100 is not going to cover someone's wage and also tech costs to actually do the stream. One could argue that $100 was too low for what I was set out to do, but frankly I would just agree with that person.
By day four, though, I found my solution = DaCast. They promised a self-service system that, while it wasn't ideal, was secure (in other words, I could set it so only the "group in another state" could see it) and had a free trial. The best part was that I didn't have to sign anything either. And trust me, after expecting that most people charge hundreds of dollars a month for secure live streaming, finding one without any restrictions like that is quite a bliss educing experience.
Now while the service wasn't quite as easy to use as they promoted, I still got the hang of it in around two hours (a lot of that was having an arm wrestling match with figuring out where to stick my publishing point info). Their price structure was a little alien to me, though, as they charged by the bandwidth to the tune of 25 cents a unit. They had a calculator which seemed to make this pretty transparent, and I tabulated my bill out to be about $15, that was way under my budget too.
Even better? The final price to me was *drum roll* under $2. Yep, in one of my blonde moments, I had calculated the cost to show the video to the entire audience of 35 people, which since they were watching it from one computer meant I only had to pay for a single viewer. Good news for me!
So in the end I accomplished my objective and got to ratchet another peg to my old resume in terms of skills. Now tune in next time for when I get assigned the task of designing a Widget...
