The Origins of Drifting -Part 1 The Beginning
The origins of drifting often leads to debate among drift fans. While the identity of the first has long been forgotten , it is commonly accepted that Japanese driver Kunimitsu Takahashi was the first to use drifting techniques while road racing in the late '70s.
Kunimitsu Takahashi first found fame as a champion motorcycle racer in the early '60s – he was the first Japanese born winner of the Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix in 1961. After a serious motorcycle accident in 1962 Takahashi would switch to racing cars. He began his new career as a racecar driver in 1964 and slowly began to rise through the ranks. At some point Takahashi started to drift his car out of necessity to tackle tight corners while maintaining high speeds. These new cornering techniques, accompanied by screeching and smoking tires, won over many fans and helped him to win quite a few races.
This new drifting style caught the eye of Keiichi Tsuchiya, a cocky street racer and upcoming star of Japans Formula 3 scene. Impressed by Takahashi's techniques on the race track, Tsuchiya wanted to take drifting to the next level by making it a major motorsport. Tsuchiya began to practice his technique on the winding Japanese mountain passes. The many twists, turns and bends on these roads provided the perfect setting for continuous drifting. Tsuchiyas goal to take an unknown racing technique and change it into an art form on those winding Japanese mountain roads has become part of the legend of drifting.
In 1987 Tsuchiya and a few friends produced a video showing him drifting through these tight mountain roads. The video, which was named Pluspy, was a major hit and generated a massive amount of followers in Japan's racing community. The following year Tsuchiya and his partners would organize the first ever drifting competition, the D1 Grand Prix, which took place at the Ebisu Circuit in Fukushima, Japan. Thanks to the interest created by the Pluspy video, the D1 Grand Prix was very successful and has been held every year since. Today the D1 Grand Prix remains the world's leading drifting competition where the top drifters from around the world come to compete.
