Putt Better in Less Than 5 Minutes
Putting plays a major role in our golf game. It can contribute up to fifty percent of our strokes, and most of us struggle with it, and because we struggle with it we can not find confidence. Well in order to get confidence we need to make some putts, but we do not have confidence so we can not make putts. Its sort of a catch 21 that we need to find a way around. The pros did it, and now you can too!
The keys to having confidence is by building confidence off the course and developing a solid pre shot routine.
We build confidence off the golf course by saying that "Hey I am a great putter, I make every single short putt, and all of my lag putts are never farther than 3 feet from the hole." Throughout the day just keep telling yourself this over and over and over and over. We do this because think back when you step over a short putt, you think to yourself "Do Not Miss This!" And you end up missing it. You miss because the subconscious does not register do not, it just registers miss this. No matter how bad you consciously want to make the put, you can not if you have a negative image about your putting in your subconscious.
One of my favorite examples of this is in a book by Dr. Bob Rotella about the mental aspects of putting. He referred to a press conference with Jack Nicklaus where he missed a three foot putt, and they asked him a question about it. He replies "My friend, I have never missed a three foot putt in a tournament before." Even though they had proof on video that he did, that is just the type of mentality you have to have.
Now it is important to build a solid pre shot routine, because it gets us aligned, set up to the ball, and gets us in the mindset of making the putt, and eliminates most negative thoughts. Your pre shot routine is not in a book somewhere, its whatever feels right to you. For instance this is my preshot routine.
1. Read the putt.
2. Align the ball to the correct line.
3. Take 2 practice strokes while looking at the hole.
4. Take off my hat and put it back on (just feels comfortable, not sure why though)
5. Step over the ball and putt it.
If you can do start doing these things, then you will putt better.
