Regardless of wrestling games, it seems players will always be the WWE legends as Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. This hunger has been sated in the past with unlockable characters in smackdown vs raw series and the individual (yet dull) WWE Legends of WrestleMania. Now, the big names of yesteryear are back along with some of the current headliners in WWE All Stars.
There are 30 characters in WWE WWE All Stars, and they range from legends such as Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and Mr. Perfect to current superstars like Triple H and Randy Orton. The fact that so many of these people have already appeared in smackdown vs raw may seem like a turnoff, but WWE All Stars walk out of his way to not look or feel like simulation franchise SVR is.

Here character action figure versions of themselves with giant torsos and thriving biceps. Moves are trademarks, you would know from watching people like Rock and Jake "The Snake" Roberts, but they are adorned with flips, leaps into the sky, and bone-crushing impact that would destroy the mortal men. When I heard about WWE All Stars, I was told it plays like a little child was describing a fight he saw last night. This description rings true with the final product, and it makes for a really great game.
The colors are bright and beautiful to watch stars like Rey Mysterio suspended dozens of feet into the air made my friends and I cry out in amazement, and I'd much rather see this revved up and ready Macho Mon action figure spinning through the air than "realistic" interpretation I've seen before. WWE All Stars have a great style. Of course, the PSP version is not as sharp as its HD brethren, but the cartoony graphics still work and look good on widescreen.
WWE All Stars also has a great concept for gameplay, but I think that the control system breaks up. There are strikes and giant buttons, health bars, finishing move meter and a bunch of other stuff that's easy for a player to look at and understand. It's groovy. Being able to come in and do an awesome power bomb or charge up a punch is rewarding and how a game designed to capture an audience lured in by Rowdy Roddy Piper will play.
Piledriver!
It's basically the WWF No Mercy N64 control scheme at face value, but then things start to become complicated. Runs on the ring does not let you slide into the ring, and another button for it. There is a button to block strikes and another to block the tackle, but neither works unless you hold the left shoulder button, but it's not the easiest thing to explain to someone just looking to jump into the fun. When your finisher meter is full, you press buttons to set off a taunt that activates it, but if you are disabled during taunt you lose it, and people rarely stay down all that long, but there is a way to keep buttons to taunt and have the guy come up in a dazed state, which automatically trig.
It is good that there is depth in the WWE All Stars' control. There are even signs classes (Brawlers, big men, acrobats and Grappler) that comes with unique abilities and moves that are sure to appeal to people who want to put hours and hours to learn this game. I like the idea of it, but not the execution. There is no tutorial to teach you the ins and outs of classes and chain picks up, so I've never seen these nuances, unless I played with one of the developers. When I would sit down and play a friend, we were brawling to be the last man standing. When I would play computer, it will be super-cheap compared to how long it stayed on the mat and never taught me how to chain together attacks so end up on top rope.
There is a fine line between having a strategy, and claimed to have expert knowledge, and I think WWE All Stars goes a bit too far into the hardcore expert town.
The Dragon Vs Giant
You will take these moves into a few different games and modes. Gameplay is solid across the board, but nothing is so different - it's just packaging. The standout among all WWE All Stars opportunities is Fantasy Warfare. These are 15 Legend / Superstar games developers setup as a struggle for a particular title - HBK vs Undertaker for the title "Mr. WrestleMania," Mr. Perfect vs. Miz for the title "Perfectly Awesome," etc. The fighting itself is just games you could have in the exhibition, but each mating begins with a smooth, narrated video package combines promotions and WWE footage of both wrestlers. The packages are small things but they really put matches up well and make it feel like you're doing something epic.
There are three "Path of Champions", but these are just ten games where you take a wrestler and work your way to fight Orton, Undertaker or DX. There is a cutscene here and there, but it's just the guy you fight your way to speak into the camera. Strangely, you can not play tag team trail alacrity.
This one could be a good ...
Beyond that, you're left with exhibition matches - cage match, extreme rules match, elimination, tag match, etc. There is an ad-hoc mode, but it's just an ordinary 1-on-1 display or 1-on - 1 cage match. But it ran okay and was fun enough. It's nice that it's there, but it's not fantastic.
Although the sound quality is nothing to write home about (the commentators sound fine but the volume and in-ring noise sounds like it was pulled from a Genesis game), I have to say how impressed I am with the PSP version a port. Sure, I give this game the same score as any other version of WWE All Stars, but it's a big deal for a PSP game.Everything But online gaming is here from the other versions - in-game comments, video content and the experience is generally what people are coming to PS3. That's saying something because most WWE PSP outings lacks important features.
