The Origins of the Saami [speculative]
The Scandinavian Saami population of ca 100,000 people has its largest concentration in Norway.Multilocus analysis suggests that the Saami are an outlier among Europeans,with an Asian contribution to their gene pool.In Sweden the northern an southern Saami speak different languages.A Johansson [2008] conducted high resolution typing of five HLA-A class I and class III loci to establish the genetic structure of these two groups.North [154] and south [130] Saami samples were genotyped and HLA comparisons were made with 254 Swedish individuals.
The results of this study did not reveal any dramatic variations in heterozygosity between the two groups,when allele and haplotype frequencies were compared.Fewer HLA class I and class II alleles were observed in the north Saami ,than in the south Saami.The southerners had a higher allelic overlap with Europeans and the northerners had a higher contribution from Asians.This can be attributed to the greater admixture between southern Saami and the local residents of Sweden.HLA comparisons indicate that ca 87%of the northern gene pool is of European origin and 13% is an Asian component.This contrasts with 92% European and 8% Asian among the southern Saami.The phylogenetic class I comparisons that the northerners tend to cluster with the southern Tuva/Mongolian and northern Ket/Evenk Siberian populations.Genotype frequencies do not deviate from the expected binomial proportions at any locus of the two Saami groups [ibid].
The above research provides a concise explanation for the extant distribution of European and Asian genes among the Saami in Sweden.How this admixture occurred initially is less clearly defined and the following reconstruction contains a number of blatant speculative elements.As the climate moderated towards the end of the last glacial era,people from the Franco-Cantabrian refugia began to journey northward.Anderdash/Gonnerdorf in the middle Rhine valley were occupied sporadically from ca 13000-11000 BCE [all dates calibrated].residents depicted mammoths and horses in a style similar to the Dordogne cave art,in the south of France.At Lepenski Viron aquatic resources were exploited by humans ca 12000 BCE.Prior to ca 10800 BCE there were numerous settlements in northern Germany and Poland [Soffer,1995].Recovery from the glacial era north of the southern Russian plains was more muted.J Hoffecker [2005] contends that there was a low degree of settlement movement in eastern Europe pre-9700 BCE.During the Younger Dryas cold,dry period,which originated in NW Europe, many small hamlets in Germany and Poland [eg: Khatzlevo,Megirah,Yudinovo] were abandoned or suffered appreciable population reduction [Soffer,1995].Where did these individuals seek sanctuary from the intermittent cold spells from ca 10800-9700 BCE?It is unlikely that they went west towards the epi-centre of the Younger Dryas and advancing glaciers could have impeded southern movement.The logical evacuation routes were to the east and south along the Dnestor and Danube River valleys towards the Black Sea where the Younger Dryas had less impact and temperatures wer more moderate [speculation].
K Tamblets [2004] analyzed Saami genetic roots in northern,Finland Sweden and Norway.It has been proposed that the mtDNA haplogroup [Hg]V spread to north and NW Europe after the Last Glacial Maximum.The Tamblet study revealed that Hg H lineages with the HVS-I transitions 16153 and 16298,which are common among Saami samples,are more extensive in eastern than in western Europe.It is possible that this variant of Hg V could have reached Fennoscandia via central or eastern Europe.The absence of pre-V mtDNAs,that are characteristic of SW Europeans among the Saami,supports this premise.
Analysis has indicated that mtDNA Hg U5bibi [the set of lineages with the Saami motif] is mostly concentrated in eastern Europe,which implies that it was introduced to the Saami from this region.The distribution of Hg V is compatible with a people movement down the Dnestor and Danube conduits to the Black Sea and a subsequent population expansion northward to the Karelia Isthmus and eastward to the Volga area post 9700 BCE.Ca 60% of Saami male Y chromosomes are variants of Hgs N3 and R1a,which seem to have an eastern source,where these Hgs have a high frequency.Y chromosomes HGs I and R1b [Saami ca 34%] appear to have come from the west along the coastline of Norway [ibid].
MtDNa Hg U was distributed from Europe and north Africa to India and central Asia,with an over all frequency of 15-30% A Yakut from NE Siberia and a Fulbe from Senegal both harboured Hg U5,which varied at only two coding region nucleotide positions [nps].Eleven additional mtDNA sequences were obtained to augment the data,that had been obtained from the two samples.They had the control region motif 16270-150,which has a 2% frequency among the Bereber and Fulbe populations.It has a low distribution in Europe,except among the Saami [48%].Since most Saami mtDNAs with 16270-150 have the Yakut transitions at 16144 and 16189,three Saami specimens were inclided among the eleven additional samples.The Saami and Yakut clustered in the subclade U5b1b and were only distinguished by the transition at nt 16144.The estimated divergence time of this subclade,which is shared with the Berbers is ca 8.6 +/-2.4Ka..The descendants of this common ancestor are separated by a distance of 9000km.H1 and H3,two common sub-Hgs of Hg,H coalesce ca 11Ka with frequency peaks centred in Iberia and adjacent populations [eg:Berbers from Morocco].The frequency pattern of these sub-Hgs bears resemblances to those of Hg H.U5b1b and H account for nearly 90% of the Saami mtDNAs [A Achilli,2005].
The origins of the Uralic language "may" trace to the south Russian plain.People from northern Germany and Poland,who "might" have journeyed to a refugium north of the Black Sea to escape from the cold Younger Dryas weather,could have encountered Uralic speakers,before their descendants moved north post 9700 BCE.Humans were exploiting maritime resources on the Karelin Isthmus of Fennoscandia by 8800-8200 BCE [J Hoffecker,2005].Eventually these foragers travelled westward,where they encountered the people,who had treked up the western shoreline of Norway.The descendants of these two populations became the Saami reindeer herders [S Viljamaa,2007].
