A group of child soldiers enter a family's home, screaming, chanting and unloading short bursts of gunfire from their rifles. They are looking for "dogos", a term that is never explained but is understood immediately as an undesirable and often fatal label. The family is dragged out into their backyard and violently interrogated about whether they are soldiers and what goods they have. The eponymous head of the militia (Christophe Minie), just barely a teenager himself, puts
a gun in a young boy's hands and demands that he shoot his father, or these would-be soldiers will shoot all of them. Inside the house, one of Mad Dog's compatriots dresses himself in a white wedding gown and joins the melee without a single snicker uttered from his fellow soldiers.
It's a breathless, ferocious, and deeply unsettling opening to Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire's memorable second feature, Johnny Mad Dog, and the relentless urgency of that scene carries through a great deal of the film. Relocated from the Congo, the setting of Emmanuel Dongala's praised novel of the same name, to the waning days of the Liberian Civil War of 2003, the story volleys between Mad Dog and his men's involvement with the siege of Monrovia and Laokole (Daisy Victoria Vandy), a young girl trying to evacuate her little brother and legless father out of the city. They meet, face-to-face, while Mad Dog's militia patrols the deserted capital, and though he just shot a young boy for carrying oranges instead of bananas, he lets her go for reasons unspoken. They won't see each other again until the film's conclusion.
As ragingly horny and self-righteous as any other teenager, Mad Dog knows how to pause his rhetoric long enough to adorn girls with jewelry as a preface to basically bullying them into sex. One of the most riveting facets of Sauvaire's film is that he consistently evokes the impulses that drive children and boys, no matter how dark or heartfelt they might be. In between harrowing standoffs, reports from General Never Die (Joseph Duo) and moments of near-surreal melancholy, the director, who also wrote the script, offers two prolonged scenes where these tendencies play out to riveting effect. The first occurs early during a raid on a school wherein Mad Dog and his right hand man, No Good Advice (Dagbeth Tweh), belittle and then rape a well-known female broadcaster. The scene is more than a little on the nose, but it is crucial to establishing how complex and incongruous ideas of age become in this type of warfare.
The more meaningful scene comes about midway, as Mad Dog and his boys arrive on the beach. No Good Advice refuses to allow Mad Dog to slaughter the pig that Advice stole from an old man in the city. His attachment to the pig is played less for black humor than for a glimpse at the twisted inner workings of this child soldier, who is capable of seemingly endless horror and massacre but bucks at the idea of someone eating his pet. This brings up a dangerous temptation to start playing with more classical themes (revenge, betrayal) and resort to infighting, but Sauvaire's structure is as loose and unobtrusive as his camera is unflinching.
The clarity and beauty of the imagery, courtesy of the talented director of photography Marc Koninckx, is perhaps even more startling than the actions of these boys, but it serves more purposes than one. There is a grandeur to this film usually reserved for only the most nationalistically slanted and narratively uncomplicated war films. Though Johnny Mad Dog doesn't offer the grainy, rough aesthetic one might expect from a film handling this subject matter, it would be wrong to suggest that the clarity of the image washes out the film's dedication to bringing out the confusion of the conflict. When Mad Dog and his boys inexplicably drop their wounded friend off at the UN's medical tent, we are left to wade in the crossed wires of bureaucracy, rhetoric, and bungled diplomacy that led to the uneasy civility of the encounter.
Johnny Mad Dog isn't going to give The Thin Red Line a run for its money any time soon, but it's only because Sauvaire's ambitions are notably humbler. With his cast of non-professionals, many of whom actually served in child militias in Liberia, Sauvaire offers little more than a snapshot of that chaotic world juxtaposed with his own formal precision. And yet the film remains challenging for that very reason, able to engage in a catastrophic political landscape without condescension while still allowing for moments as hypnotically poetic as the youngest warrior, Butterfly, singing a soldier's tune over the makeshift grave of his friend. By the end of the film, which ties things up a bit too simply, Mad Dog and Laokole have come face-to-face once more, but Mad Dog is now just as lost as any abandoned child. The futility of resistance and revolution has settled in.
