Dangers of Video Game Shopping Online
Some of the best video game deals on the market can be found online. However, there are also dangers of video game shopping online - primarily associated with your inability to have the game in your hands before you buy it. Dangers include non delivery of goods, damaged video games, fraudulent or incorrect listings and video game copies. However, with a knowledge of how to identify these potential dangers and avoid them before they occur, you can protect yourself while shopping for video games online and take advantage of all the great deals that can be found on the Internet.
Failure to Deliver Video Games
Unfortunately, some sellers of video games on the Internet either forget to send the order or never intended to in the first place. For the most part, this is more common with smaller companies or private sellers than major online marketplaces. However, mistakes can happen and video games can fail to be shipped once you have paid for the order. You are not normally helpless in this situation. In fact, you are legally protected in the event that you pay for a video game that never gets delivered.
One of your best defenses against non delivery of video games is to keep detailed records of the purchase and any correspondence with the seller. If the seller directly tells you that he has no intention of shipping the goods, you can file a report with the marketplace from which you bought the video game. Not only will they consider this complaint seriously, but they will likely be able to secure a refund for you. For the most part, filing a report with your local police department does little good. Unless you have been ripped off for thousands of dollars, they will not have jurisdiction and will be unlikely to assist you in tracking the criminal down. Your tax dollars at work…
You should also only deal with sellers that use shipping services that offer tracking services or require signatures to verify that the package has been delivered. If you pay for these services, you have clear cut proof that the video game was never delivered. For large purchases, this can be enough evidence to allow you to file a civil suit against the seller.
Dealing with Damaged Video Games
Unfortunately, damaged video games are a lot harder to prove than failure to deliver. You really have no way to show that you did not damage the game accidentally or that the seller knew that the video game was damaged before shipping. While retail stores can offer damage protection for used games as a way to protect their customers, few online merchants offer a similar service. If you receive a package that is severely damaged, you must not sign for the package when it arrives and, instead, file a complaint with the shipping provider. If you sign for a badly damaged package and open it, the fault is no longer with the shipping service.
Your best defense against damaged video games is to shop only with reputable sellers that have a history of provided verified good service to their customers. Usually, these are the sellers that will offer protection to their customers in the event that a video game is delivered broken or scratched. Usually, video games cannot be damaged without the case being noticeably damaged unless there was some negligence on the part of the packager. However, there have been some cases when a new game was delivered that was in perfect condition on the surface but with a broken game inside.
Identifying Incorrect Video Game Listings
Never purchase a video game through a listing that does not provide clear details and pictures of the game. The pictures must show only the game being sold and it must be apparent that the picture is of the actual product. If the picture is a promotional or retail picture of the game from a private seller, it might be better to consider your options. The listing must also clearly outline the condition of the game on a fair and verifiable rating scale. The listing should include any extras that come with the video game (manuals, game maps, special features discs, etc.). If the marketplace allows and you need more information, you should feel free to ask the seller questions about the video game before purchasing. This will also be indicative of the seller's attitude. In other words, if they can't take the time to answer your question, the chances are good that they won't have the time to ship your video game quickly.
Pirated Video Games and the Online Marketplace
Many DVD collectors will tell stories of how often they receive discs with the dreaded "Disc Made in Mexico" stamped on the inner lining. This is almost always a clear indication that the video is pirated. However, this is also a frequent situation with video games. Anonymous sellers will try to sell as many pirated video games as possible before getting noticed then move on with a different name. These sellers are difficult to track and serve to ruin the hard work of honest video game designers and manufacturers.
If you receive one of these games, it is important to report it immediately. Depending on your state or country of residence, you could be charged with a crime by not reporting the receipt of pirated video games or movies. This does not mean that you will lose your money. In fact, most agencies will allow you to keep the game in exchange for your assistance, secure a refund for you or give you a new legal copy. The problem is usually not as much legal as it is the quality of the product. It is rare that a pirated disc will come with a manual or be as high of quality as an authentic copy.
