The Sound of Music tells the tale of Maria and her life as governess for the Von Trapp family in Austria. The movie is an adaption of a Broadway play, which was actually based on "The Story of Trapp Family Singers", a memoir by Maria von Trapp. It starred Academy Award winner, Julie Andrews as Maria, and Christopher Plummer as Captain Georg von Trapp.
The movie premiered in 1965 in the US and grossed US$158 million, which equates to about US$1.046 billion in 2011! Many believe The Sound of Music was the film that prevented 20th Century Fox from going bankrupt, after the production house released the very expensive and low revenue-generating Cleopatra. The musical broke all box office records previously held by Gone With The Wind. Decades later, songs like "The Sound of Music", "Do Re Mi", "My Favourite Things" and "Edelweiss" continue to resonate in family homes around the world.
The 45th Anniversary edition of the movie has been hailed for its impressive restoration using new Blu Ray technology.
